Some of the regular winter residents of Tryon who remained here this summer are probably surprised to find Oc tober weather here during Aug ust. They won’t believe you when you tell them that we have so many, nice cool days in the sum mer, and during October when the leaves turn to their beauti ful colors under a clear blue sky there’ll be hikes and picnics ga lore .... Private Charles W. Nessmith is now at Fort Eustis, Va., Batry B. 1st Btn. 1-106 . . . The Santa Fe railway passenger cars carry huge signs on their sides reading BUY WAR BONDS, igyhe company is having the same Viessage lettered on 200 box cars. .... Chairman Julian B. Hester reported the other day that Polk County needed to buy about $5,000 more of E bonds to reach the quota assigned us by the govern ment .... The Duke of Kent, youngest brother of King George and Edward Windsor, was killed in an airplane crash over Scot land Monday .... The scrap metal pile opposite Tryon Motor Co., is growing. This _Continued on Back Page_ MRS. LUTHER THOMPSON Mrs. W. Luther Thompson, 69, of Saluda, died this morning about 4:30 a. m., at her home. She had been in declining health for some time. Mrs. Thompson who had made her home in Polk county for many years, was a daughter of the late Madison and Mary Kil patrick Cantrell of Henderson county. She is survived by her husband, William Luther Thomp son; three sons, Richard Luther, Roy Alonzo and Franklin Wil liam Thompson; two daughters, Mrs. Frank Whitaker and Mrs. Grady Johnsoft, all of S'aluda. One brother, William Alonzo Cantrell, of Seattle, Washington, also sur vives.. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Friendship Baptist church near Saluda, with the Rev. M. A. Kizer of Weaverville, a former pastor, and Rev. Malcolm Ross of Tryon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. SOFTBALL NEWS Adams-Millis won a close game from Soumerco 8 to 7 Tuesday afternoon at Adams-Millis park. Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Bacon of Tryon, N. C., chairman of the in ter-church committee at Tryon that sponsors monthly all-day programs for Croft soldiers, and Mbs. Blanche F. Dunn, volunteer hostess of the servicemen’s, club at Tryon, will be dinner guests Thursday of Mrs. D. B. Fletcher, Croft senior hostess, at the offi cer’s club at Camp Croft.—Spar tanburg Herald.
